Cataract Management

Cataracts (clouding of the lens) may develop at any age, although it most commonly occurs in seniors. They are caused by:

  • Exposure to ultraviolet light
  • Use of steroid medication
  • Eye trauma
  • A family history of cataracts

If the clouding is so severe that it impairs vision and a patient’s ability to perform everyday activities such as driving and reading, then surgical treatment is recommended.

Cataract Symptoms

Most cataracts develop gradually. As a result, you may not notice signs or changes in your vision straight away. Some of the symptoms to watch out for are:

  • Difficulty seeing at night
  • Blurred vision
  • Seeing ‘halos’ around lights
  • Double vision
  • Problems with glare (especially sunlight)
  • Eye sensitivity

The only way to know for certain if you have cataracts is to book a dilated eye exam. By widening your pupil with eye drops, our optometrist can detect any early signs of cataract development.

Cataract Diagnosis

At Sunridge Eye Clinic, our accredited optometrists are qualified to diagnose cataracts through a comprehensive medical eye examination. This includes:

  • A health and medication history checkup
  • A vision history
  • A visual acuity test
  • Visual field testing
  • A eye-health evaluation

We recommend that patients, especially those above the age of 40, should have a dilated eye exam from one of our optometrists at least once every two years.

During the evaluation, we will carefully examine your lens for any signs of cataract formation.

If a cataract is discovered and the clouding is disrupting your vision, we will refer you to a trusted and respected ophthalmologist for surgery.

Sunridge Eye Clinic is happy to provide cataract management services including all pre and post cataract surgery care.

If you notice changes in your vision or are experiencing any of the above symptoms, book an appointment with our friendly and trusted optometrists today.
