Diabetic Retinal Examination

Diabetic retinopathy is one of the most common causes of blindness in people under the age of 65. It is estimated that 2 million Canadians have some form of diabetic retinopathy.

At Sunridge Eye Clinic, our qualified optometrists can perform comprehensive dilated eye exams to screen for, diagnose and manage diabetic retinopathy.

What is a Diabetic Retinal Examination?

Diabetic retinopathy can only be detected through a comprehensive dilated eye exam which includes:

  • A visual acuity test
  • Tonometry (measuring of pressure in the eye)
  • Pupil dilation

These exams allow our optometrists to look for the early signs of the disease including:

  • Leaking blood vessels
  • Macular edema
  • Pale, fatty deposits on the retina
  • Damaged nerve tissue
  • Changes to the retinal blood vessels.

Importance of Diabetic Retinal Exams

Early detection and treatment can reduce the risk of blindness from diabetic retinopathy by 95%.

That’s why we encourage our diabetic patients to schedule a dilated eye exam at least once a year.

Through retinal imaging, we perform a detailed and accurate inspection of the potentially affected area and provide effective solutions to maintain your eye health and vision.

How is Diabetic Retinopathy Treated?

Diabetic Retinopathy can be treated with several therapies, used individually or as a combination. These include:

  • Corticosteroids
  • Focal/Grid Macular Laser Surgery
