CATARACT MANAGEMENT IN CALGARY

5 Signs You May Need Cataract Surgery

Cataracts are very common in people who are over the age of 60, but in the early stages of development, they don’t cause any symptoms or otherwise prevent patients from leading active lives.

In such cases, cataract surgery is unnecessary. But what about when cataracts start making your day-to-day life more difficult?

Here are 5 tell-tale signs that you may require cataract surgery in the near future:

  1. You’re experiencing sensitivity to light. This is a very common symptom of cataracts, and it can also be very uncomfortable and dangerous. If you are experiencing sensitivity to bright lights, then you should visit your eye doctor straight away. This will allow your optometrist to make an early diagnosis, before your vision changes become more severe.

  2. Blurry vision is affecting your quality of life. If you are constantly cleaning your glasses, or rubbing your eyes, to make your eyesight clearer, then this is a strong sign that your cataracts are worsening.

  1. Everything has a yellow tint. As your cataracts darken, they can cause a yellowish tint to develop in your vision. This darkening can make it more difficult to distinguish colours, perceive fine details, or even read.

  2. You have double vision. The clouding of your lens that occurs from cataracts can lead to you having double vision. If this is preventing you from performing day to day activities, such as driving or reading, then you should visit your optometrist straight away.

  3. You’ve had frequent prescription changes. Do you frequently need a prescription upgrade? If so, the chances are you have cataracts. If your vision is changing very rapidly, a prescription upgrade won’t help. You need to book an appointment with your eye doctor as soon as possible.

At Home Cataract Management

While there is no conclusive proof that you can prevent cataracts from developing, there are certain things you can do to manage your cataract risk factors and maintain overall eye health.

These include:

  • Scheduling regular checkups with your optometrist.
  • Eating a diet that is rich in nutrients and antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E.
  • Quitting smoking.
  • Limiting your alcohol intake.
  • Wearing sunglasses.
