Top Tips For Taking Care of Your Eyeglasses

Eyeglasses present an extremely affordable, convenient, and trendy vision correction option to patients. However, in order for them to work optimally, you must take care of them. Here are some of the top tips on how to look after your eyeglasses and keep them in excellent condition:

  • Use the right storage case. Choosing the right case for your eyeglasses is very important as this plays a big role in determining the lifespan of your spectacles. In addition, whenever you aren’t wearing your spectacles, be sure to keep them in this case. If you don’t like the big, bulky cases, ask your optometrist about microfibre pouches that are great for storing reading glasses.
  • Use the right chemicals. If you’re going to use a chemical to clean your glasses, always use the sprays and cleansers recommended by your optometrist. NEVER use household cleaners such as Windex, as this can actually damage the lens coating.
  • Dry them properly. If you can, allow your eyeglasses to air dry. This will prevent any materials from getting on the lens. Otherwise dry them with a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Use the right cloth. You should never use a towel, napkin, or tissues to wipe your lenses. All of these materials have texture and they could easily scratch your lenses.
  • Hold your eyeglasses properly. You should always hold your frames by gripping the piece that crosses the nose bridge as this will keep the frame from bending. This is important because bent frames negatively affect the way you see and they’re more likely to feel uncomfortable.
  • Wash your glasses often. By washing your glasses at least once a day with warm water will keep them in their optimal state. Remember, the cleaner your glasses, the less your eyes have to strain to see through smudges and dust.

Do You Have Damaged Eyeglasses? Here’s What to Do

If there has been some damage to your eyeglasses, such as a cracked lens or bent frame, it is always best to take your spectacles into your local eye clinic. At Sunridge, our friendly and professional optometrists can help determine if your eyeglasses are repairable or if you require a replacement.

Finding the Right Pair For You

If you’re finding that your eyeglasses are getting frequently damaged, we can help you find a pair that is more durable and that will withstand your daily activities. For example, impact-resistant polycarbonate lenses and scratch resistant coatings are excellent for patients who lead more active lives.
