6 Tips to Protect Your Child's Vision During COVID-19

Your child’s vision is very important for their overall development. While our Calgary eye doctors are available for emergency eye care during COVID-19, here are some tips on how to keep your child’s eyes healthy at home.

Vision plays a very important role in your child’s physical, cognitive, and social development. That’s why it’s important that you ensure they practice proper eye care at home and receive regular eye exams from your Calgary optometrist. Uncorrected vision problems can:

  • Hinder your child’s development
  • Interfere with learning
  • Lead to permanent vision loss
  • Lead to poor performance in sports and other activities

6 Tips From Our Calgary Eye Doctors On How To Protect Your Child’s Eye Health at Home

When it comes to your family’s health, including the health of their eyes, prevention is always better than a cure. That’s why it’s important to take care of your child’s eyes and catch problems when they are in their early stage, to prevent serious eye problems.

Here are some tips on how to protect your child’s eye health while you’re at home:

  1. Watch out for warning signs: Your child may not recognize eye problems, so it’s important for parents to watch out for signs of vision impairment. These could include squinting, sitting too close to digital devices, closing one eye when reading, or holding books closer than usual.
  1. Encourage proper eye care: Help your child develop good eye care habits from a young age. Teach them how to wash their hands often and avoid rubbing their eyes. In addition, wearing protective eyewear when playing sports or swimming can prevent eye emergencies.
  1. Avoid digital eye strain: In today’s digital world, children are using smartphones and computers more than ever, and while this has its benefits, it can also cause a plethora of eye problems. Try to delay your child’s exposure to digital screens, or keep it restricted to educational purposes. In addition, limit the use of digital screens especially at night.
  1. Let them play outdoors. Playing outdoors instead of being stuck in front of a TV can help your child’s vision in many ways. Not only will it reduce digital eye strain, but the exposure to different colours in natural light helps kids develop their visual senses. Just make sure they wear sunglasses with 100% UV protection to avoid excessive UV exposure.
  1. Encourage a healthy diet. Make sure your child eats a healthy and balanced diet. Good nutrition is essential for eye health, especially vitamins A, C, and E, zinc, lutein and omega-3 fatty acids. A balanced diet can also prevent obesity and obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, which can affect eye health.
  1. Get protective eyewear. Sports are fun and can keep your child physically healthy, but they can also increase your little one’s risk of eye emergencies. Make sure they wear protective goggles during contact sports and wear goggles while swimming to keep their eyes safe.
