6 Simple Tips For Looking After Your Eyeglasses

Your prescription eyeglasses are a big investment and you will spend a lot of time selecting the frame and colour to ensure you find the right pair of spectacles to suit your face shape, fashion sense, and lifestyle.

However, once you have your eyeglasses, it’s important to think about how you will take care of them. Neglecting to look after them can damage the lens and frames and may require frequent repairs or more costly replacements.

To keep your eyeglasses in top condition, here are some simple tips to follow:

1. Use your lens cleaning cloth. When cleaning your eyeglasses, ONLY use the lens cleaning cloth provided to you by your optometrist. Never use tissues or towels to clean your lenses as this will result in scratches or the wearing away of specialized coatings such as blue-light or anti-glare.

2. Always keep your eyeglasses in the case when you aren’t wearing them. Keeping them in your handbag or pocket can cause dirt to accumulate on the glasses, and may even scratch them. Don’t wear them on your head as this can distort the shape and cause them to become loose.

3. Never put your lenses face down. When you take your glasses off, always place them with the lenses up. If you put them face down, you risk scratching the glasses and damaging them beyond wear.

4. Don’t push on the nose piece. If your eyeglasses slip down your nose, avoid pushing them back up by putting pressure on the nose piece as this can distort your spectacles and make them uncomfortable.

5. Use both hands. When you are putting on and removing your eyeglasses, ALWAYS use both hands. This will encourage correct alignment and minimize any undesirable changes to the fit of your frames over time.

6. Purchase a cord. If you frequently misplace your eyeglasses, you may want to invest in a glasses cord. This is preferable to placing them in your shirt pocket or hanging them from the neck of your top since such positions can warp the shape of your spectacles.

Get Your Eyeglasses Professionally Cleaned

Even if your lenses are in good shape, other components of your eyeglasses such as the frame and nose-pad can accumulate dirt and become difficult to clean. If this is the case, you may want to visit your optometrist.

Such a professional can clean your eyeglasses using an ultrasonic cleaning device and replace yellowing nose pads with brand new ones.
