How to Choose The Right Eyeglasses

Eyeglasses come in a wide variety of colours, shapes, and sizes. Here’s how to find the perfect pair based on your face shape.

When it comes to finding the perfect pair of eyeglasses, a lot depends on your individual preferences and face shape. While trying on a wide variety of spectacles can give you a good idea of what you want, narrowing down your choices in advance can save you a lot of time and make the experience much more enjoyable.

Here are 3 main points to consider when choosing eyeglasses:

  • your eyeglasses should compliment and reflect your best feature (eg. blue glasses to match blue eyes)
  • the shape of your eyeglass frame should contrast your face shape
  • the size of the frame should e in scale with your face size

How to Choose the Best Eyeglasses For Your Face Shape

Your face shape is one of the most important factors to consider when selecting eyeglasses and it’s a great place to start if you’re feeling stuck or overwhelmed by all the choices. Here is a basic guide on what to look for based on your face shape:

1. Oval Shaped Face

People with an oval shape tend to have a very softly rounded forehead and chin and fairly balanced proportions. Almost all frames will suit this face-shape, so you can be as adventurous as you like!

Because this is the most versatile face shape, you may want to:

  • choose a bold frame that compliments your features
  • play around with colour and texture
  • consider wide or oversized eyeglasses

2. Heart Shaped Face

Those with heart-shaped faces will be widest at the forehead, gently narrowing down towards the chin, with high and defined cheekbones. These individuals often tend to have very soft features.

To complement this, you may want to go for eyeglasses that have:

  • an exaggerated browline
  • a width that is slightly wider than your forehead for balance
  • prominent end points

Some of the best frames for this face shape include cat eye and clubmaster-inspired styles.

3. Round Shaped Face

Round faces tend to be short, with a wider forehead, rounded chin, full cheeks, and a softer jawline. For such people, it’s best to choose a style that will complement these soft features and go for frames that are round rather than angular.

In addition, you should go for eyeglasses that:

  • are rectangular (this helps sharpen softer features)
  • have bold and angular lines
  • have a bottom frame that hits just above the cheekbones

4. Square Shaped Face

Individuals with this face shape tend to have a face whose width and length are proportionate. In addition, this shape is characterized by a broad and wide forehead, strong jaw, and square chin.

The best type of eyeglasses for this face shape are those that:

  • are round (work to soften the more angular features)
  • have a thinner frame
  • have a width that is slightly wider than the cheekbones

To create more length in your face, and to offset the very strong features, you may want to opt for narrower styles that are still angular in shape to complement your face.
