What are the Different Types of Contact Lenses?

Making the decision to wear contact lenses can be a bit overwhelming at first. In Calgary contact lenses can be bought through most optometrists and the sheer amount they have on offer can make anyone's head spin. That's why we've put together this handy little guide to help you narrow down the options before you step foot in our eye doctor Calgary clinic.

What Types of Contact Lenses are There?

Contact lenses primarily fall under two categories, hard and soft. If you plan to buy contact lenses online, these are the two most common types you'll come across. Though we recommend visiting your optometrist Calgary before doing so. That way you can get an even more in-depth education on what type will work best for your unique situation.

Hard Calgary contact lenses

These are the contact lenses your parents grew up using. They're the first type of contact lens ever made available through mass production, and are primarily made out of plexiglass nowadays. Previous to the development of plexiglass, contact lenses were actually made of good old fashioned hard glass. As time has gone on and advancements have been made, rigid glass permeable (RGP) Calgary contact lenses have become the industry standard. RPG contact lenses are way more comfortable than their predecessors and because of their permeability, they're conducive to providing greater oxygen flow to your eye.

Soft Calgary contact lenses

Soft contact lenses have become the most popular choice amongst consumers. The first iteration of these types of contact lenses began to debut in the 1970s and they've been evolving ever since. Nowadays hydrogel contacts are primarily comprised of water, with some containing nearly 80 per cent. Soft contact lenses are disposable, and fall under three different categories: daily disposable, daily wear, and extended. Daily disposable contacts are much like their name implies. They are inserted at the start of the day but once it's time for bed they must be thrown out. There is no cleaning or maintenance required. Daily wear contacts meanwhile last up to 18 hours and are cleaned and stored every night before retiring to bed. These lenses are usually replaced on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly schedule. Extended wear contacts on the other hand can last up to 30 days, and are worn for the entire duration of that time.
